PermalinkGelatin is not vegetarian
I found this old news article featuring Dixie Mahy, the President of SFVS. She points out the hazards of some foods that may contain non-vegetarian substances, such as gelatin.
Dixie Mahy, San Francisco Vegetarian Society: "Gelatin is made from animal hoofs."
"...A vegetarian is someone who does not eat any meat, fish or chicken."
She says that's why vegetarians don't eat anything with gelatin.
The woman who originally wrote us declined to speak on camera, but she did ask NutriSystem to remove the cocoa and shredded wheat cereal from its vegetarian program.
NutriSystem refused, saying a survey of its customers found some vegetarians eat gelatin, others don't.
