PermalinkSilk is not vegetarian
One more item about my trip: I visited a Silk factory and I was curious to know (of course) if the worms were harmed in the process of making silk. Turns out, they are killed while in hybernation inside the coccoon. Some in my tour group tried eating a dead worm. Yuk! Apparently they are tasteless. It takes a thousand worms to make one blanket.

Actually, silk worm cocoons are considered quite a delicacy. They taste like lobster. And of course they are extremely high in protein. Also, I think if you're going to kill a creature, you shouldn't be wasteful, but use all the parts of it as efficiently as possible. Maybe a family having a dinner of silk worm cocoons gives a pig somewhere another day to live!
