I got to Beijing on June 7th (June 6th USA time) and the first three days were spent in Beijing. I am now in Shanghai, and tomorrow I will take the flight back home so that I can arrive today. Make sense?
Anyway, I have found it sooooo hard to be a veggie here. Things would have been easier if I was on my own, but no, I'm in a tour group, and they cater to the 'norm'. Apparently, the tour group have never encountered a vegetarian before. They did try to be as accommodating as possible, but their choice of restaurants were poor. In many cases the restaurant people didn't understand why I couldn't eat MaPow Tofu, and just ignore the meat bits in it - things like that.
I did have some encouragement from, of all places, a rest stop along the highway. One of the local vendors was selling vegetarian chicken! Of course I bought some, and the tour guide couldn't believe it when I told him.
Shanghai is a great city, 17 million people, and I would say, maybe several hundred (or thousand?) Sky Scrappers. With that, the busy traffic, metro system, buildings full of history and, of course, the pollution, it reminds me so much of London. |
