Dining Out – Saturday, April 22, 6:00 p.m. Medicine New-Shojin Eatstation 161 Sutter Street (between Montgomery & Kearney), near Union Square, San Francisco This unique Japanese style food is based on Zen monks of Japan featuring a seasonal cuisine called New-Shojin incorporating western nutritional ideas with traditional menus with exotic names and ingredients developed over half a millennium ago. Appetizers range from $4.50 to $6.50 and feature intriguing items like: Jade Nuggets, tempura of natto-filled shiso leaves with lemon & sea salt $5; Mountain Monk Te-Maki, two hand-rolls: Chrysanthemum leaf, pickled gourd/natto, 9-grain rice, flax seeds $5.50; Inari & Napa Cabbage Roll, napa cabbage roll with pickled melon, avocado, shichimi/sweet inari with 9-grain rice $6.50. The Salads are just as interesting ranging in price from $6.50 to $7.50 featuring common veggies in an uncommon way: Warm Spinach-Persimmon, baby spinach tossed in warm ponzu dressing, fuyu persimmons, shitake, toasted cashews $7.50; Sesame Lotus-Shitake, simmered woodear & shitake, crisp shaved lotus root, fuji apples, creamy sesame dressing $8. In addition to Soups & Noodles from $6 to $8, there are unique Entrée choices ranging from $15 to $18 like: Broiled Ikomi Dengaku, whole oven-roasted red bell pepper filled with yomogi-fu, eggplant, brussel sprouts tofu, shiro miso glaze $15; Raw Nigiri Sushi, 8-piece nigiri plate accompanied by silken tofu and winter miso soup $16.50; Fried Tempura, deluxe basket of seasonal vegetables and mushrooms in light batter tendashi, dipping broth, & meyer lemon $16. They also offer Tasting Menus (with 6 or 9 course Samplers). Their dessert menu from $3 to $6 offers: Chilled Coconut Cup, creamy coconut milk with maple syrup, kanten cubes, silverear mushroom & toasted buckwheat $4; Green-Tea Tofu, mildly sweet soy custard, infused with bitter matcha green tea powder $4; or slightly decadent Chocolate Mousse, exquisite valrhona chocolate blended with silken tofu & toasted pistachio shavings $6.
